The Wines

The Sopron wine region is a predominantly red wine area. Weninger’s focus is on the Kékfrankos variety, which has a long tradition in this region. But Franz Reinhard Weninger, who is not afraid to experiment, has found that international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Syrah also grow well here. Recent successes with Fehérburgundi (Pinot Blanc) have been an incentive to continue exploring the potential of white wines here in the Sopron region.

Rosé Brut
Fruity and lively but by no means superficial. Influenced by its proximity to Lake Neusiedl and the slate in the soil.

Fehérburgundi (Pinot Blanc)
Dominant aromas of apple and almond. Long aging on the lees gives a supple quality to the dense finish.

Kékfrankos
A very individual and harmonious wine that speaks clearly of its place of origin. Pretertiary-age rock gives it a spicy bite on the palate. The minerals and salts lend it a youthful quality. A fruity classic Blaufränkisch typical of the Sopron wine area, with a delicate, spicy nose.

Sopron
Ripe tannins accompanied by a harmonic composition of fruit and acid; an easy-to-drink, fruity meal accompanist. 70% Merlot, 30% Syrah.

Old vintages – Recent Tastings

Rich treasures slumber in the cellars, and from time to time they are brought up and examined: here our tips and impressions for the old vintages (1997-200?).

1998, Spern Steiner
At its peak! Best drunk now. Wonderful fruit and velvety elegance.

2000, Spern Steiner
Recently showed its forte during a blind tasting with Guigal. Very easy to drink and at the same time a wine with potential.

2000, Syrah
Wow!

2001, Spern Steiner
A wonderfully drinkable wine, still very fruity. Can be drunk now.

2002, Spern Steiner
The high tannin content of this vintage is starting to mellow. Enjoyable now but can still be stored also.

2002, Cabernet Franc
Tasted at harvest time with my interns. Still very young and fresh. Please wait!

Weninger’s Earthly Treasures

“Von diesen Böden müssen Sie kosten,” it says on our new Blaufränkisch box: “You’ve got to try these soils.” Time and time again our decades of wine-growing experience have shown us that it is above all the microclimate that determines the taste of the wine. We want to present this range of flavors through wines from our best sites, e.g. Hochäcker and Kirchholz in central Burgenland, Saybritz in southern Burgenland, and Spern Steiner in Balf near Sopron. What is striking about this collection is that all the wines derive from the same grape variety, and yet because they come from different “soils” they differ in a very basic way. Our Blaufränkisch box is dedicated to people who enjoy tasting and comparing. Our recommendation: open all the bottles at once and taste them blind. We have enclosed tasting notes in the box for reference, a detailed analysis of the soils conducted by experts from the Federal Institute of Geology in Vienna, and descriptions of the impacts of each of the soils on the wine.
